The flag bearers of Finland revealed – a true surprise name from the Lions received the honor!
The defender of the Lions Mikko Lehtonen will carry the Finnish flag at the opening ceremony of the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics on Friday, February 6.
For Lehtonen, this task is a great honor.
– It is enough to look at the names of those who have carried the Finnish flag in previous competitions to understand how great this is. It is a huge honor to carry the flag, and I am proud to represent Finland at the Olympics. Let’s hope for success for the entire team, Lehtonen says in a statement from the Finnish Olympic Committee tiedotteessa.
For Olympic champion and world champion Lehtonen, the Milano-Cortina games will be his third Olympics. Lehtonen is the only player from Finland’s team playing in Europe.
Four years ago, at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, the Finnish flag was carried by hockey player Valtteri Filppula.
Alongside Lehtonen, the Finnish flag will be carried by cross-country skier Krista Pärmäkoski, a five-time Olympic medalist, who is competing in her fifth Olympics.
The head of the Finnish Olympic Team and the top sports director of the Olympic Committee Janne Hänninen justifies the selection with experienced athletes.
– We have excellent top athletes for this task, who by their own example have shown how dreams can become goals and goals can become reality, Hänninen says.
