Finnish comet dropped from the NHL – now in top form in the farm team
The Finnish promise Ville Koivunen, 22, started the current season in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He played two games without scoring before being sent down to the farm team.
Koivunen has now played six games in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and has risen to second place in the league’s scoring leaderboard. He has accumulated 4+7=11 points in the games he has played. Only his teammate Danton Heinen (4+8=12) is ahead of him in the scoring chart.
This season, Koivunen has been scoreless in only one AHL game. In other games, his point totals have been: 0+2, 1+1, 1+1, 1+2, and 1+1. In the previous game, Koivunen scored the winning goal in overtime.
Last season, Koivunen already played at an impressive level in the farm team, scoring 21+35=56 points in 63 games. Due to his strong performances, he was also called up to the NHL towards the end of last season, where he performed well. In eight games, he recorded 0+7 points.
