The Athletic: Lions’ Olympic star is being traded in the NHL
The media giant The Athletic has published its list of NHL players who have received little attention and may be traded in the NHL before the trade deadline.
One Finnish name on the site’s list is Olli Määttä, who has fallen off the radar while playing for the Utah Mammoth. The Athletic’s editorial team believes that the two-time Stanley Cup winner, who has played well over 800 NHL games including playoffs, can still bring depth to a team aiming for success in the playoffs.
– Määttä has practically lost his spot in the lineup due to the acquisition of Nate Schmidt and the development of Nick DeSimone. Määttä is a big player and a decent skater, but he does not utilize his size in physical play.
– Nevertheless, he is an experienced defenseman with a reputation as a good team player who can fulfill his role on the third pair, the Athletic panel assesses.
Määttä, who was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings in the fall of 2024 as an injury replacement, seized his opportunity and signed a three-year contract worth $10.5 million with the Utah Mammoth last March.
This season, Määttä has played 19 regular-season games with stats of 0+1. The defenseman represents Finland in the Milan-Cortina Olympic tournament.
