Teemu Selänne surprised – bought a hockey club
Teemu Selänne joins the junior ice hockey club scene in the United States as he becomes a part-owner of the new team in Orange County, which is expanding into the USHL league. Selänne will work on the ownership side alongside John Moreland.
USHL has confirmed that several new expansion teams will join the league for the 2027–2028 season. A total of six new teams will be added, and Orange County is one of these new organizations.
At the same time, Joe Sakic is also joining as an owner, taking a role in San Diego’s new expansion team.
Selänne previously played in the NHL for the Anaheim Ducks and won the Stanley Cup in 2007. Now he returns to the California hockey environment through club activities.
– As a former USHL parent, I understand the value that the league brings to its players. I am also excited about how the league approaches issues related to safety, education, and hockey development. It is optimized to help players develop at their own pace, Selänne said in a statement.
USHL is the highest junior ice hockey league in the United States. Currently, there are 16 teams in the league from the northern and central states, and the players are aged 16 to 21.
Last season’s championship was won by the Sioux Falls Stampede.
