Teemu Selänne on his changed image: “You can’t please everyone”
During his long and exceptionally glorious hockey career, Teemu Selänne was beloved by the entire nation. His achievements in both the national team and the NHL are etched in the memories of many Finns forever.
Throughout his career, Selänne was also in the spotlight in a positive light outside the rink. He encouraged young people to be active and appeared in a Valio milk advertisement.
After his hockey career, Selänne has become a polarizing figure in Finland. When Selänne posts something on social media, the post often garners negative and critical comments, whether the topic is an electricity bill or a charity event organized for war and police dogs.
SuomiKiekko asked Selänne himself what he thinks about his changed image.
– It is a bit amusing. I don’t think about it too much. I’ve walked my own path, and you can’t please everyone. Maybe it was easier to please everyone as a hockey player, but that’s not my goal, Selänne says.
– I have always had my own – sometimes strong – opinions, and I think that is also a strength.
Sometimes Selänne has also engaged in “social media debates” and responded to the comments he receives.
– If something bothers you, then it bothers you. You can always react according to what feels right for you, Selänne says.
– But yes, from that immediate social media stuff, it emerges that many people are feeling bad. That should always be remembered before responding or saying anything, as you don’t know what’s behind it. Sometimes you’re surprised yourself at what this is all about. You hope that everyone would feel good.
