Helsinki IFK grabbed an important away victory on Friday as they traveled to the local derby against Kiekko-Espoo. The match ended with a 3–0 win for the Helsinki team.

This was the first match for HIFK’s new head coach Tommi Miettinen at the helm of the Helsinki team. The SuomiKiekko website interviewed Miettinen after the match.

– A good and unified performance from us. We managed to show the things we hoped for. The victory is a huge thing for us at this moment and gives us belief for the future, Miettinen commented.

Under Olli Jokinen, HIFK won only four of their first 14 matches of the season and lost ten. On Friday night at Metro Arena, a somewhat more liberated-looking HIFK was seen. However, Miettinen did not see any significant mental change in the team’s performance due to the coaching change.

– I watched HIFK’s last games under the previous coaching staff, and I didn’t see any indifference or laziness. The team fought cohesively even then, and I got a committed, hungry, and receptive team to coach yesterday. We tried to tweak some gameplay aspects a bit, and I am satisfied with what we managed to show today with a day’s notice.

“Facing a New Situation”

Miettinen has previously gained experience at the helm of league clubs. The 50-year-old, originally from Savo, has coached teams such as Kuopion KalPa and Turun Palloseura in the Liiga. Now he faces a somewhat different challenge.

– It is certainly a different experience to jump onto that moving train, and pulling results is immediately a hugely important thing. It cannot be underestimated that IFK is a very followed team and is facing a new situation in that way, Miettinen noted.

Miettinen did not elaborate on what an HIFK resembling him might look like in the spring.

– Yes, we are living in the moment so we will analyze this now, and tomorrow there is another very tough game ahead. We humbly approach the next challenge again.

The next challenge awaits immediately tomorrow, Saturday, when the Helsinki team travels to Hämeenlinna to face HPK. The match starts at 17:00.
