Teemu Selänne’s full blast to the Olympic judges: “What a joke!”
The Lions suffered a harsh 2-3 defeat to Canada in the Olympic semifinals on Thursday. Finland led the game 2-0, but Canada rolled over the last two periods like a public prosecutor and came back to win.
Finland’s penalties played a decisive role in the loss, as Canada scored two of their three goals on the power play. Hockey legend Teemu Selänne criticized the Canadian referees who officiated the game on X after the match.
– It seems impossible to beat the best hockey nation and Canadian referees on the same night… An incredibly embarrassing penalty with 90 seconds left in the Olympic semifinal. What a joke, Selänne writes.
Selänne refers with his comment to the penalty given to Niko Mikkola at the end of the third period. He high-sticked Nathan MacKinnon in the face. The hit went unnoticed by the referees, but when MacKinnon emphasized the hit and spread his arms, the referee called the penalty seconds later.
