Arizona State University hockey player Matthew Mayich remains in critical condition in a hospital in Phoenix. The 21-year-old Mayich collapsed on August 20 during an outdoor practice at the school’s track and field facility.

Mayich’s hospitalization has now lasted over five days. According to the local newspaper Azcentral, the player suffered a possible cardiac event.

On Tuesday, a virtual prayer gathering was held due to Mayich’s situation. Many people from his hometown in Ontario, Canada, as well as others, participated.

– Although we are going through this heartbreaking time, it is truly a great blessing to see how everyone is praying and how much of an impact Matthew has made on so many people. It is in God’s hands. Please do not stop praying and do not give up, Mayich’s cousin Victoria Beara thanked the participants and asked them to continue their prayers.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that the university is investigating the circumstances of the practice during which Mayich collapsed.

– The student-athlete who collapsed during the outdoor practice on Thursday morning is still hospitalized. The university is not naming the student-athlete due to privacy reasons. He is a member of the ASU hockey team. The university is looking into the circumstances related to the practice, ASU Vice President for Media Relations Chris Fiscus confirmed to The Athletic.

Emergency responders arrived on August 20 at 8:30 AM. According to rescue authorities, the alarm was related to heat, and one person was transported to the hospital.

The Phoenix area has experienced extremely hot weather in recent days. On the morning of the incident, the temperature was already around 31 degrees.

Mayich, originally from Ontario, transferred to the Arizona State team from Clarkson University. He played 34 games last season at Clarkson, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.

Before college hockey, Mayich played for four seasons with the OHL team Ottawa 67’s. He accumulated over 250 games and 106 points.
