The Edmonton Oilers have begun the head coach search process for the upcoming season. One of the potential candidates is the controversial Mike Babcock.

Babcock’s name is a surprise to many. His coaching tenures with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Columbus Blue Jackets ended controversially, and he is not known to be very popular among all of his former players.

According to NHL journalist Darren Dreger, at least one of Edmonton’s players has been actively advocating for Babcock. Forward Zach Hyman has been the most visible supporter of Babcock during the coaching search, Dreger reported.

The history between Hyman and Babcock goes back to Toronto, where Hyman began his NHL career at the start of the 2015–16 season. Hyman played five seasons under the demanding coach before Babcock was dismissed from his position in the fall of 2019.
