Source: SHL club is targeting a Finnish forward from across the pond – offer on the table
Pittsburgh Penguins’ Finnish forward Joona Koppanen is being sought after by Sweden’s SHL, reports the Swedish newspaper Norrbottens-Kuriren.
According to the newspaper, Luleå HF has made a contract offer to Koppanen for next season. Luleå is planning to replace Koppanen for Eetu Koivistoinen, who is moving to Kärpät for the next season.
Koppanen, 28, has played ten NHL games this season in Pittsburgh, with stats of 0+1. He has spent most of the season in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, playing 31 games with points of 6+10=16. Koppanen is in his third season with Pittsburgh, and his contract ends after this season.
Koppanen played his first games in North America in the 2017-18 season. Over the years, he has primarily played in the AHL, where he has recorded 390 games (59+94=153).
In the NHL, Koppanen has played 30 games with stats of 1+2. Besides Pittsburgh, he has represented the Boston Bruins, who drafted the Finn in the 5th round in 2016.
Koppanen last played in Europe during the COVID season 2020-21, when he had a loan stint with Ilves and KOOVEE. He played a full season with Ilves before moving across the pond in 2017-18.
