Source: NHL leaving behind – Finnish defenseman being taken to a new address
Finnish defender Juuso Välimäki is leaving North American rinks behind and heading to Sweden. Expressen reports that the SHL team Brynäs IF is acquiring Välimäki for next season.
According to Expressen, negotiations between Brynäs and Välimäki have progressed significantly. A contract is expected to be finalized within a few weeks.
Välimäki, 27, was traded this season from the Utah Mammoth to the Carolina Hurricanes. However, he has only played in the AHL this season, where he recorded 24 regular season games with the Chicago Wolves, achieving 6+14=20 points. In the playoffs, Välimäki has scored 2+3 in seven games. The Wolves’ season in the farm league is still ongoing.
In his career, Välimäki has also represented the Arizona Coyotes, the predecessor of Utah, and the Calgary Flames in the NHL, playing a total of 271 games with 11+61=72 points. He was originally the Flames’ first-round 16th overall pick in the summer of 2017.
Last year, Välimäki was part of the Lions’ 4 Nations team, but he did not play a single game in the tournament.
