Matthew Schaefer, 18, is a name to remember. The New York Islanders selected the defenseman as the first player in last summer’s draft, but the young man’s rookie season is surpassing even the wildest expectations.

Last night, Schaefer was once again in form. He scored his team’s winning goal in overtime against the Utah Mammoth. At the same time, Schaefer etched his name in NHL history.

Schaefer became the youngest player ever to score an overtime goal in the regular season. The previous record was held by Sidney Crosby, who scored in overtime at the age of 18 years and 101 days. Schaefer is 18 years and 70 days old.

Recently, Schaefer also broke the record of defenseman legend Bobby Orr. The Islanders defenseman became the youngest ever to score two goals in a single game in NHL history.

Schaefer has now recorded 15 points with 7 goals and 8 assists in 18 games. He is the top scorer among defensemen and tied for fourth in the defensemen points race.
