Carolina Hurricanes prepared a seismic transfer bomb behind the scenes.

Sportsnet’s insider reporter Elliotte Friedman reported on the 32 Thoughts podcast that the Hurricanes tried to snatch Edmonton Oilers’ superstar Evan Bouchard with an offer sheet.

“The Hurricanes were ready for an aggressive move. Edmonton quickly made a contract extension with Bouchard because the Hurricanes threatened them with an offer sheet,” Friedman said in the broadcast.

Bouchard eventually signed a four-year, $42 million deal with the Oilers. According to Friedman, Bouchard’s salary was initially planned to be closer to $9.5 million, but the Hurricanes’ threat raised it to $10.5 million.

After Bouchard stayed with the Oilers, the Hurricanes shifted their focus to New York Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller, who moved to Carolina in a major trade. Miller signed an eight-year, $60 million deal with the Hurricanes.
