The Lions suffered an unfortunate setback in the opening period of the group stage match against the USA on Monday.

Finland’s defender Urho Vaakanainen was caught under a check from the USA’s over 100-kilo NHL giant Mathieu Olivier at the end of the period, resulting in him not being seen in the playing lineup at least in the second period of the match.

Vaakanainen apparently sustained a facial injury from Olivier’s check.

Representing the New York Rangers in the NHL, Vaakanainen has collected one assist in the first two World Championship games.

The ongoing World Championships are the first of the 27-year-old defender from Joensuu’s career.
