Sakari Manninen: Here is the reason for the Lions’ victory – “We were cool as cucumbers in that”
ZÜRICH. In the light of the tracks, the congested group stage of the World Championships played by Sakari Manninen has opened up in the tournament’s most important games. The forward, who once decided the gold medal for the Lions with an overtime goal in the home championships, collected 1+1 points in the 4-1 quarter-final victory against the Czech Republic.
After the match, Manninen praised his team’s patience against a tightly defending Czech Republic.
– A tough battle. Satisfied with the patience to attack. The opponent had a pretty tight neutral zone. We couldn’t get through by passing. We were patient to dump it in deep and get the puck from there, Manninen recapped the Lions’ tactics.
– We got takeaways from the opponent and didn’t force our offensive game too much so they wouldn’t get to counterattack. We were calm in just grinding out our own game. Puck in deep and then just relentless pressure.
According to Manninen, the Czech Republic posed a tougher challenge for the Lions than what the final result might suggest.
– Of course, they are always a dangerous team. As a trailing team, you have to take some risks. It was a controlled victory. A really tough opponent that tested us, Manninen praised the Czech Republic, which had played a rather subdued tournament overall.
