Russia’s World Championship return has once again caused a sponsor to roar – threatens to withdraw from the competition!
The long-time partner of the Ice Hockey World Championships, Strauss, threatens to withdraw from sponsoring the 2027 World Championships if Russia participates in the tournament.
The German company announces that it will give up all logo visibility at the World Championships to be held in Germany next spring if Russia is involved. The actual termination of sponsorship is still under consideration.
The company’s CEO and brand director Henning Strauss spoke about this in a statement published on Wednesday.
– We have been a partner of the Ice Hockey World Championships for many years and value our collaboration with the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, Strauss states.
– If the Russian national team participates in the 2027 World Championships in Germany as a result of the CAS decision, we will give up all logo visibility in connection with the tournament. We are also considering withdrawing from our role as a sponsor, he continues.
Previously, the Swedish company AJ Produkter announced that it would withdraw from sponsoring the World Championships. Nokian Renkaat also plans to withdraw if Russia participates in the tournament.
Skoda, on the other hand, is considering withdrawing from sponsoring the World Championships if Russia is involved. The Czech company Tipsport has stated that it does not want its advertisements to be visible in Russian matches.
Russia’s possible return to the World Championships has sparked strong opposition in the ice hockey world. Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Czech Republic, and Latvia have announced that they will not agree to play against Russia, even if the country is allowed to participate in the World Championships.
