Switzerland has not yet taken a final stance on whether it intends to refuse to play against Russia in international ice hockey tournaments.

The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation commented on Thursday in a statement regarding the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concerning the possible return of Russian national teams to international competitions.

The federation’s president Marc Lüthi is critical of the CAS decision. However, he emphasizes that Switzerland is awaiting the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) guidelines before making its own conclusions.

– We condemn aggressive wars and do not accept them. However, at this moment, we are not on a political level but on a sporting level. It is primarily the IIHF’s task to decide on the next steps and the implementation of such a decision, which I personally view critically, Lüthi says.

Lüthi reminds that the IIHF must first determine whether Russian national teams can be allowed back into international tournaments and what conditions would be associated with a possible return. At the same time, it must be assessed whether there are still grounds for Russia’s exclusion from competitions.

– As long as these questions remain unresolved, it is premature to speculate on possible consequences, Lüthi states.

The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation intends to address the matter with the country’s political decision-makers and other key stakeholders once the IIHF’s next decisions are clear.

– The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation will not make such a significant decision alone. A hasty decision would be the wrong approach at this stage. It is crucial that we consider different perspectives and assess the situation calmly, objectively, and without making hasty or emotional conclusions, Lüthi emphasizes.

Switzerland’s cautious stance differs from the positions of several other European countries. Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Latvia have already announced that they will not agree to play against Russia.
