Mikko Rantanen played the rest of the NHL season with a knee issue, says the general manager of the Dallas Stars, Jim Nill.

According to Nill, Rantanen’s knee ligament was torn during the Olympic tournament in Milan in February. The Stars’ star forward returned to the ice only at the end of March after the injury and was not in top form during the opening round of the playoffs, with the Stars losing to the Minnesota Wild.

Nill stated that Rantanen would have needed an additional 1-2 weeks of recovery time to be fully fit.

Rantanen himself did not want to hide behind the injury during his team’s end-of-season interview.

Rantanen or any other Finnish players from the Stars will not be seen in the Lions’ lineup at the World Championships starting on May 15.
