Payday! MTV: Tappara hits the jackpot from the NHL – Pelicans also receives a hefty sum
Tappara and Pelicans receive significant compensation from the NHL due to their young prospects’ NHL draft picks and first NHL contracts.
According to a report by MTV Urheilu, Tappara collects by far the largest sum among Finnish clubs. The Tampere club will receive as much as 677,000 euros from the NHL.
Pelicans also gains access to a significant amount. The Lahti club will receive 451,000 euros in training compensation.
Compensation is paid to clubs for both players drafted to the NHL and those signing their first NHL contracts.
A player drafted in the first round brings the previous season’s club $40,000. For players drafted in later rounds, the compensation is $25,000. Both amounts have increased by $5,000 from before.
A significantly larger sum comes from the first NHL contract. The compensation has risen from $285,000 to $315,000.
The large sum for Tappara is backed by a considerable number of young top prospects. A large part of the amount is explained by Benjamin Rautiaisen‘s first NHL contract and this summer’s first-round picks Oliver Suvanto and Juho Piiparinen. Suvanto and Piiparinen signed their NHL entry-level contracts immediately after their draft selections.
Additionally, Tappara will receive training compensation for players drafted in later rounds, including Simon Katolicky, Lucian Bernat, and Vilho Vanhatalo.
In total, Finnish clubs will receive just under two million dollars in NHL compensation this year. However, this amount is still significantly lower than last year, when the total for Finnish clubs rose to 2.8 million dollars according to MTV.
