The Toronto Maple Leafs’ start to the season has been quite a flop. After 22 games played, the team is last in the entire Eastern Conference.

In the midst of difficulties, it is clear that changes are needed in Toronto. Head coach Craig Berube is not likely to be fired under the current circumstances, so the only option left is to make changes to the roster.

The Athletic reporter Jonas Siegel states that Toronto’s most potential trade chip is defenseman Brandon Carlo, 28. Of all the team’s players, Carlo is the easiest to trade away, and he is likely to attract interest from other teams.

Carlo is a basic defenseman by profile. In 18 games this season, the 196-centimeter defense colossus has recorded two assists.

Carlo’s annual salary is $4.1 million, but part of this is retained by the Boston Bruins. The defenseman’s cap hit is only $3.485 million. The contract runs through the summer of 2027.

At one time, Toronto acquired Carlo from the Bruins by giving up a 1st round draft pick and prospect Fraser Minten. The market value of the basic defenseman is hardly as high anymore.

Out of 22 games this season, Toronto has only collected nine wins in regulation time. They have struggled particularly on the road, where the Leafs have won only one of their seven games. The team’s goal differential is eight goals in the negative.
