Last night, the NHL held a draft lottery that determined the order of the first 16 picks for next summer’s draft. Lady Luck favored the Toronto Maple Leafs, who won the first overall pick.

The Vancouver Canucks had the best odds for the first overall pick (25.5%). Toronto’s chances of winning were only 8.5 percent.

Vancouver’s misfortune didn’t end there. The San Jose Sharks won the second pick, causing Vancouver to drop two spots in the draft order. The same happened to the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and Calgary Flames.

With their first overall pick, Toronto will likely grab Gavin McKennan. The Canadian winger posted impressive stats of 15+36=51 in 35 games in the NCAA this season.
