Now there’s excitement for the NHL playoffs: Two Finns are joining the lineup!
On Tuesday, very happy news arrived from the morning skate of the Buffalo Sabres for Finnish fans. The club’s top prospect Konsta Helenius, 20, was seen in practice on the same line as Jason Zucker and Jack Quinn.
The line composition strongly suggests that Helenius is set to make his NHL playoff debut in the next game against the Montreal Canadiens.
Previously practicing outside the lineup during the playoffs, the Finnish prospect gained NHL experience this season in nine games. In these games, he recorded 1+3 points.
However, for most of the season, Helenius played in the AHL, where the young player was in excellent form. In 63 games, he posted impressive stats of 21+42=63.
Buffalo is also making favorable changes to its goaltending department from a Finnish perspective. Alex Lyon, who has struggled in the last two games, will step aside as starter with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen taking over the goaltending duties in the fourth game against the Canadiens.
The playoff series between the teams continues in the early hours of Wednesday morning Finnish time in Montreal. The Canadiens lead the series 2–1. A spot in the Eastern Conference finals against the Carolina Hurricanes will be secured with four wins.
