Now Sofia Virta speaks – comments on her departure from TPS.
TPS announced on Tuesday that Sofia Virta will no longer continue on the board of HC TPS Turku Oy.
Virta made headlines on Monday when she shared a column criticizing TPS’s Veli-Matti Savinainen on Facebook. Savinainen refused to wear a pride shirt in Saturday’s match.
Virta commented on her resignation from the TPS board on her Instagram account.
– Equality, the right to be freely oneself, also belongs in sports. We know that we still have a tremendous amount of work to do so that everyone in the sports world can feel safe regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
– Unfortunately, this work has been made very difficult. We see it in the world where athletes belonging to minorities and their rights are oppressed.
– Everyone should be able to participate, compete, and live as their true selves in a safe and genuinely equal environment. That is why I also joined the TPS board in the first place, and I am proud of the work that has been done for equality and fairness at the SM-liiga level for a long time, even though it is not easy.
Virta states that as a result of recent events, she submitted her resignation request from the TPS board today.
– I wish the team success for the remainder of the season and the club courage to continue the important work for equality and fairness in sports in the future. In this time, it is perhaps more important than ever.
