The Detroit Red Wings have secured their star forward Alex DeBrincat with a seven-year, $91 million contract. The team announced the decision on Wednesday.

DeBrincat would have been one of the top names in next summer’s NHL free agency market. Now Detroit has locked in their leading scorer from last season with a long-term deal that has an average annual value of $13 million.

The 28-year-old American’s salary will rise significantly. He is currently playing the final season of his four-year contract, which has an annual value of $7.875 million.

DeBrincat scored 41 goals and 85 points in 82 regular season games last season. In six games this season, he has recorded 4 goals and 4 assists.

DeBrincat arrived in Detroit from the Ottawa Senators in the summer of 2023. The winger, who also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, has accumulated 603 points with 298 goals and 305 assists in 702 NHL regular season games.
