Now it hit – a historic big bang in the World Championships!
Norway sensationally advanced to the semifinals of the ice hockey World Championships on Thursday evening by defeating Latvia 2–0 in the quarterfinals. This marks the country’s first semifinal spot in the tournament’s history.
The match remained scoreless for a long time, although both teams created dangerous situations. The breakthrough came in the second period when just 18-year-old Tinus Luc Koblar scored with a spectacular shot into the top corner to put Norway in the lead.
Latvia sought an equalizer in the closing moments without a goalkeeper, but Norway’s defense held firm until the end. Noah Steen sealed the deal by scoring into an empty net in the final seconds of the match.
The atmosphere in the stands was extremely tense.
– Now I need a defibrillator. This is so exciting, TV2’s expert “Ricky” Nygård said according to Expressen.
Norway’s tournament has been exceptionally strong. The team finished second in the group stage and secured victories against the Czech Republic and Sweden, among others. Canada also had to stretch to overtime against the Norwegians.
After the match, the achievement was described as a historic milestone.
– This is a historic moment in hockey for Norway. What is happening here is absolutely incredible, said Viaplay commentator Jörgen Klem.
Expert Ole Eskild Dahlström also emphasized the uniqueness of the situation.
– This is huge. I’m completely exhausted. It will take time before this sinks in. This wasn’t a pretty win, but it doesn’t matter, he rejoiced.
Norway will face Switzerland in the semifinals on Saturday. In the other matchup, Canada will play against Finland.
