NHL’s surprise decision – Russia included in the new national team tournament
NHL is completely changing the format of the All-Star event next winter. Instead of the traditional single game, a tournament featuring five teams will be played.
The tournament will include Canada, Finland, Sweden, the United States, and a “Rest of the World” team. Players from different countries, including Russia, can be selected for it.
The games will be played in a three-on-three format. Initially, the teams will face each other in short five-minute matches. The two best teams will advance to the final, which lasts ten minutes.
The winning team will receive a prize of two million dollars.
Each team will have 11 players: nine skaters and two goalies. Some players will be selected by fan votes, while the rest will be chosen by the NHL and the players’ association.
The potential participation of Russian players has sparked discussion, as Russia has been absent from international tournaments due to the war in Ukraine.
The NHL has been using the three-on-three format during All-Star weekend since 2016.
