NHL’s flop team has had enough – radical solution!
The New Jersey Devils have relieved Tom Fitzgerald of his duties as GM on Monday.
Fitzgerald, 57, had been with the organization since 2015, when he started as an assistant GM. He took on the GM role in 2020, and from 2024 he also served as the director of hockey operations.
During his tenure, the Devils had a regular season record of 218–204–39. The biggest success came in the 2022–23 season, when the team set franchise records with 52 wins and 112 points. In this decade, the Devils made the playoffs twice, reaching the second round at best.
Fitzgerald stated that the decision was made in agreement with the team’s management.
– After discussing with David Blitzer, it became clear to everyone that the best solution for the team is to move forward, he said.
He also emphasized his appreciation for the organization and his contribution to its development.
– I have always said that New Jersey is a hidden gem. I am proud of the work we did to raise the standard and make the organization an attractive destination. I look forward to the next step in my career and will fondly remember my time with the Devils.
According to ESPN, the parties parted ways amicably. The Devils did not name an interim GM but will begin the search for a new GM immediately.
Fitzgerald’s future could be resolved quickly, as his name has emerged as a potential candidate for the GM position with the Nashville Predators.
