NHL team facing tough decisions – will the door open for Patrik Laine?
Patrik Laine is still without a contract in the free agent market. His name has been mentioned in connection with several NHL teams over the summer.
Laine has previously been linked to the New York Islanders this summer. The team has reportedly discussed with Laine since the free agent market opened, but the Islanders were only willing to offer the Finn a tryout contract.
Laine may now have another opportunity to join the Islanders through a new twist. The Islanders’ buyout window opens on Monday, August 3, and will be open for 48 hours, until Wednesday.
This would give the Islanders a chance to create space in their salary cap, which would also make it possible to acquire Laine. Montreal Hockey Fanatics speculates that the most logical options for the Islanders would be to buy out either Ondrej Palat or Pierre Engvall’s contract.
Palat, who joined the Islanders mid-last season, earns six million dollars this season and his contract covers next season as well. Palat finished the last season with only 1+4 points in 29 games for the team.
Engvall did not play any games last season due to injury. His contract, which guarantees three million dollars in annual earnings, is valid until 2030.
Laine played only five games for the Montreal Canadiens last season, with stats of 0+1.
