The Detroit Red Wings are securing their star forward Alex DeBrincat with a long and lucrative contract extension.

Sportsnet’s NHL reporter Elliotte Friedman reported on X that Detroit and DeBrincat are very close to a seven-year contract extension. The annual value of the new deal would be around 13 million dollars, which would mean a total contract value of approximately 91 million dollars for DeBrincat.

DeBrincat’s current contract expires after this season. He signed a four-year contract worth 31.5 million dollars in the summer of 2023, which guarantees him an average annual salary of 7.875 million dollars.

According to Friedman, the 28-year-old DeBrincat’s annual salary would increase by over five million dollars.

DeBrincat has been one of the key players in Detroit’s offense for several seasons now. Last season, he won the team’s internal scoring title, recording 85 points with 41 goals and 44 assists in 82 regular-season games.

The start of the season has also been strong for DeBrincat. In six games, he has collected eight points, four of which are goals and four assists. In last night’s NHL round, DeBrincat was again effective, scoring two goals and assisting on one in Detroit’s 4–5 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils.

DeBrincat arrived in Detroit from the Ottawa Senators in the summer of 2023. He began his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks. Overall, the forward has played 702 regular-season games in the league, accumulating 603 points with 298 goals and 305 assists.
