In the NHL, two incredible goaltending records were set – the second one is unlikely to ever be broken.
Last night’s NHL round featured two impressive goaltending records. The first record was set by Carolina Hurricanes’ Brandon Bussi and the second by New York Islanders’ Ilja Sorokin.
Bussi is playing his first full season in the NHL. The 27-year-old goaltender has performed at least decently for Carolina, appearing in 18 games with a save percentage of 90.6.
While Bussi’s save percentage isn’t breathtaking, his winning percentage is. He has won 15 out of his 18 games. In the entire history of the NHL, no goaltender has collected 15 wins in such a small number of games, and it won’t be easy to improve Bussi’s record. Previously, the record was shared by Ilja Samsonov, Andrew Hammond, Frederik Andersen, Brent Johnson, and Ken Dryden. They took 19 games to gather 15 wins.
Sorokin, on the other hand, led New York Islanders to a 9-0 victory over New Jersey Devils. At the same time, Sorokin became the NHL’s all-time leader in the number of shutouts requiring 40 saves. Sorokin now has seven shutouts with 40 saves.
