NHL is left behind – World Championship medalist moves to a major club
Latvian forward Rodrigo Abols, who represented the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL for the last two seasons, is returning to European ice hockey. He has signed a three-year contract with Swiss powerhouse SC Bern.
– Rodrigo is a strong and effective two-way center with excellent leadership qualities, commented Bern’s sports director Martin Plüss in the club’s statement.
Abols, 30, played 42 games for the Flyers last season, scoring 3+7=10 points. The season before, he played 22 games in the NHL with 2+3 points and 47 games in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, scoring 15+17=32 points.
Abols has represented the Latvian national team in nine World Championships and one Olympics. He was part of the team that won bronze at the World Championships in spring 2023.
Before his NHL seasons, Abols played for several years in Sweden. In his best SHL season, he recorded 41 points.
