HIFK’s Daniel Mäkiaho saw his 12-game point streak come to an end against Ilves on Wednesday in Helsinki. However, after the game, the forward did not give the matter much weight. HIFK won, and the points leader learned on Sunday that he was named to the Lions’ roster for the first time ever.

– [Antti] Pennanen called me on Sunday to say that there was a national team call-up available. I went a bit quiet, but I am really happy to get to play.

Just over a week ago, HIFK fired Olli Jokinen and Tommi Miettinen came in as the new coach. Under the new coaching staff, HIFK has won all three games they have played.

– The opening play was the first thing we set out to change. Also, the idea that we play as a unit close to each other in all areas. We don’t just throw the puck around and wait for our chance, Mäkiaho commented to SuomiKiekko about the changes under the new coaching staff.

Niko Huuhtanen had the opportunity to double HIFK’s lead into an empty net with two minutes remaining. However, Huuhtanen decided to pass to Mäkiaho, whose point streak was on the line. The decision nearly backfired when the pass did not connect, and HIFK found themselves on the penalty kill half a minute later. After the game, Mäkiaho was asked if Huuhtanen had his point streak in mind.

– Well, apparently he did, yeah. It was close, but not this time, Mäkiaho speculated after the game.

HIFK still plays twice before the national team break, facing Ässät in Pori on Friday and KooKoo in Kouvola on Saturday.
