NHL handed down a harsh penalty: Star defenseman receives a massive suspension
Defenseman Charlie McAvoy has received a significant suspension from the NHL for his brutal act in the playoffs. The NHL has announced a six-game suspension for the Boston Bruins superstar after he struck Buffalo Sabres forward Zach Benson in the face during the first round of the playoff series between the teams.
Since the Bruins’ season ended with that series, McAvoy will serve his suspension at the beginning of next season.
The situation has sparked considerable discussion, as McAvoy’s action was exceptionally dirty. The Bruins defenseman went after Benson with a vendetta after Benson had tackled him moments earlier and delivered a brutal scythe-like swing to the forward’s head area.
The 29-year-old McAvoy is one of the Bruins’ biggest stars, also in terms of his salary. The defenseman earns $9.5 million per season.
During the current NHL season, McAvoy played 69 regular-season games with stats of 11+50=61, making him the Bruins’ fourth-highest scorer. The defenseman was also part of the team that won Olympic gold for the USA in Milan.
