The Boston Bruins, who missed the NHL playoffs last season, have signed an important contract extension.

The team has secured last season’s second-best goal scorer, Morgan Geekie, 26, with a six-year, $33 million contract extension. The deal guarantees the forward an average annual income of $5.5 million.

Geekie just had a breakthrough season in the NHL, scoring 33 goals and 57 points in 77 regular-season games. The forward’s previous goal record (17) dated back to the season before last.

Also signing an extension with the Bruins on Monday was Finnish defenseman Henri Jokiharju, whose new contract is for three years. The NHL free agency market opens Tuesday night Finnish time.
