The season opener of the Detroit Red Wings, who have been struggling in the NHL for years, was not lacking in color. The New York Rangers secured a 2–0 away victory, but the most talked-about events of the evening took place in the stands.

The Detroit star Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade, found himself in the fans’ crosshairs even before the opening puck drop. The introduction of the former captain sparked a loud booing concert from the audience.

The protests from the supporters did not stop there. Just five minutes into the game, a collective chant echoed from the stands: “sell the team.”

Signs of fan outrage were also visible in the hallways of the arena. Several supporters dressed in Larkin’s jersey had customized their shirts by hand. One had covered Larkin’s name with tape and replaced it with the word “Loser.” Another had chosen the word “Traitor” instead.

Larkin was not part of Detroit’s lineup for the season opener. However, he had been participating normally during training camp.
