Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund has made a big revelation regarding the situation of the team’s star defenseman Rasmus Andersson.

The Swedish defenseman, who has long been in trade rumors, will soon begin his final contract season with the Flames. According to Backlund, trading his countryman elsewhere is just a matter of time.

– Yes, he will be traded. That is clear, Backlund admitted the realities in an interview with The Athletic.

– But the team wants a good return for him. He wants a big contract, so he wants to play well. I talked to him, and he doesn’t want to be a distraction for the team.

– It’s a shame that things have come to this point. I don’t think they are close to a contract extension (in Calgary), but you never know. Things can change, so we’ll see, Backlund states.

Andersson, 28, who has represented the Flames for nine seasons, has recorded 50 points in his best season. Last season, the Swedish defenseman logged 31 points with 11 goals and 20 assists in 81 games.
