NHL analyst declined the World Championships – “It wasn’t a long conversation”
The team preparing for the World Championship in Sweden has suffered a major setback: New York Rangers star forward Mika Zibanejad reveals he will skip the tournament.
– I had discussions with national team coach Sam Hallam and GM Josef Boumedienne. To me, it didn’t seem sensible to go to the tournament considering the past season, the Olympics, and how my body felt. It wasn’t a long discussion, Zibanejad explained his situation on the Sporthuset podcast.
Zibanejad was by far the most effective scorer for the Rangers, who had a disastrous season. The 33-year-old star center collected 78 points in 81 games with a record of 34+44.
The Finnish-background Zibanejad is not the only Swedish veteran player to decline the call-up. In addition to the forward who once celebrated World Championship gold in the Tre Kronor jersey, others who have declined include Rickard Rakell and Mikael Backlund.
