The New York Rangers’ goaltending situation has become difficult due to Igor Shesterkin‘s injury. The star goaltender’s season is over, and the team may resort to quite an unusual solution.

According to ESPN reporter Emily Kaplan the Rangers are expected to explore options to strengthen their goaltending department. One possible name is Jonathan Quick, who ended his playing career last season.

The 40-year-old Quick represented the Rangers for his last three seasons. He currently works as the team’s goaltending development director.

According to Kaplan, Quick is content with his life after his playing career, but a return to the NHL cannot be completely ruled out.

– If the Rangers asked him to play, sources say he could be an option, Kaplan writes.

Shesterkin is not the only injured goaltender for the Rangers, as Finnish Joonas Korpisalo is also currently sidelined. The team’s goaltending roster also includes Dylan Garand, who has only played five games in the NHL so far.

For now, the Rangers’ goaltending duo consists of Garand and Spencer Martin. The latter was called up to the NHL roster from AHL team Hartford Wolf Pack.

Quick played 19 seasons in the NHL and accumulated 829 regular-season games and 92 playoff games. Quick’s trophy cabinet also includes three Stanley Cup championships, two of which came with the Los Angeles Kings and the third with the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Rangers are now expected to explore goalie help.

Jonathan Quick, 40, is comfortable in retirement and now serves as NYR’s Director of Goaltending Development. But if the Rangers asked him to play, sources believe he could be a possibility.
