NHL: a mega trade is brewing – Did Toronto have enough of William Nylander?
The Toronto Maple Leafs considered surprisingly tough decisions at the NHL trade deadline. Nick Kypreos stated on The JD Bunkis Podcast that the team’s GM Brad Treliving was willing to discuss the potential trade of star forward William Nylander.
According to Kypreos, the Maple Leafs did not rule out the possibility of listening to offers for the Swedish forward.
– I’ve heard that they were willing to discuss Nylander, and they should be. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, Kypreos said.
The 29-year-old Nylander has played his entire NHL career in Toronto. The Maple Leafs drafted him in the summer of 2014, and he is currently in his 11th season with the team. So far, he has accumulated 672 points (284 goals, 388 assists) in 733 games wearing a Toronto jersey.
Despite difficulties, Nylander has been his team’s most effective player this season. A groin injury has kept him out of 17 games, but in 48 games, he has still scored 60 points (22+38) and leads the Maple Leafs’ internal scoring race.
The forward is currently in the second year of his eight-year contract. The deal averages an annual salary of $11.5 million.
Toronto’s season has been overall challenging, which has fueled discussions about potential changes in the team. Nylander was asked on Tuesday if he believed this season would just be a single dip.
– I really hope that’s the case. Otherwise… yeah, he replied.
The Maple Leafs are currently on an eight-game losing streak. The team lost 1–3 to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
