Mysterious announcement: Vezina winner leaves NHL team for the time being
The Ottawa Senators’ Swedish star goaltender Linus Ullmark will be sidelined from team activities for an unspecified period.
The Senators announced late Sunday night that the absence of the Swedish star, who won the Vezina Trophy for the NHL’s best goaltender in 2023, is due to personal reasons, and the team will not comment further on the matter. Ullmark, who is vying for a spot on Sweden’s Olympic team, has played 28 games this NHL season.
Ullmark’s absence opens up a chance for Leevi Meriläinen, who has played 10 games as the backup this season, although his statistics from the early season have left much to be desired. The 23-year-old from Oulu has allowed an average of 3.43 goals per game this season, with a lackluster save percentage of 87.4. Just last season, Meriläinen played 12 games in the NHL with impressive stats of 1.99 and 92.5%.
The Senators are currently just one point away from the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
