The team heading to the Lions’ World Championship can receive a top-level reinforcement, as a hot name from the NHL is on the table. The strong performer from the Calgary Flames, Olli Määttä, admits his interest in the spring World Championship tournament.

– Of course, there is interest. We already had a brief preliminary discussion, but I can’t say much more, the Calgary Flames defender reveals to MTV Sports.

The Lion jersey attracts the experienced defender.

– Such events are unique. You never know when you won’t get to play them anymore, the two-time Stanley Cup champion reminds.

Määttä’s season gained new momentum at the winter Olympic tournament, where the defender, who had long been watching games from the stands, rediscovered his joy for the game. Now the focus is clearly back on international competitions.

The atmosphere of the Lions also receives high praise from the star defender.

– All tournaments with the Lions have been amazing. The culture is right, and the locker room is incredible – it doesn’t matter who is playing there, Määttä exclaims and also highlights the role of national team GM Jere Lehtinen.

Määttä has been seen with the Lions at the World Championships previously in 2021, 2023, and 2024.

This year’s World Championships will be held in Switzerland from May 15 to 31.
