Last summer’s top draft pick Matthew Schaefer made history in last night’s NHL round.

Schaefer became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to score a game-winning goal. The 18-year-old Canadian talent scored the New York Islanders’ game-winner in a 4-3 victory against the San Jose Sharks.

The previous record was held by New Jersey Devils’ Craig Wolanin, who scored a game-winning goal at the age of 18 years and 135 days during the 1985-86 season.

Schaefer, who recorded 1+1 against the Sharks, has now registered a point in each of his first six NHL games. He became the second defenseman to achieve this after Marek Zidlicky.

Schaefer is currently second in the NHL defensemen scoring race with seven points, trailing only Cale Makarin.
