This summer, Matias Maccelli, who switched from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the New York Islanders in the NHL, got off to a flying start in his new jersey.

Playing just over 19 minutes in the game, Maccelli scored 2+1 as the Islanders defeated their local rivals, the New York Rangers, in a preseason game with a score of 4-3.

All of the Finnish talent’s points came on the power play, where the 25-year-old winger is expected to have a significant role as the regular season begins.

Each of Maccelli’s goals also involved the Islanders’ young star defenseman Matthew Schaefer, who registered 1+2 in the game. Rangers’ Eeli Tolvanen recorded one assist.

Appointed as the Islanders’ head coach at the beginning of April, Peter DeBoer was understandably pleased with the performance of his new Finnish star.

– In this league, you have to score a certain number of goals to reach the playoffs, regardless of how well you defend. In our discussions, we have focused on how to add more scoring power to our lineup. This included acquiring players who can help us on the power play.

– I think he fulfilled both of these points, DeBoer praised to the media.

– He did exactly what he needed to do on Tuesday to show what his role in this team could be, DeBoer continued.

Maccelli played 71 games last season in Toronto, with stats of 14+25=39. Despite this, the Maple Leafs did not end up offering the forward a new contract.

Maccelli signed a one-year contract worth 2.25 million dollars with the Islanders during the summer free agency.
