Matias Maccelli: a new NHL team was found quickly
Finnish forward Matias Maccelli has found a new team in the NHL. The 25-year-old winger has signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders just a couple of days after the Toronto Maple Leafs decided not to offer a contract extension to the Finn who spent only one season with the team.
The new contract brings Maccelli a yearly salary of $2.25 million, which means a pay cut of over a million dollars compared to last season. In Toronto, the Finn earned just over $3.4 million per season.
Maccelli joined the Maple Leafs last summer with high expectations from Utah, where his role had diminished. In the recently concluded season, Maccelli played 71 regular-season games for Toronto and recorded stats of 14+25=39.
The Islanders offer the Finn a new opportunity to restart his career. Even in Utah, Maccelli showcased his offensive potential, and in New York, the man’s goal is likely to return to being a reliable scorer in one of the top two lines.
