Leijonat: Top reinforcement from the NHL for the World Championships – one player heading home
The Finnish men’s ice hockey national team receives its final piece for the World Championship tournament as Buffalo Sabres forward Konsta Helenius joins the team on Thursday in Zurich. According to the Ice Hockey Federation, Helenius is the last addition to the final tournament squad of the Lions.
20-year-old Helenius is participating in the men’s World Championships for the second time in his career. He was also part of the spring 2024 tournament and has since risen even more strongly to the international elite level.
– Helenius is a versatile and very intelligent player. With the Buffalo Sabres, he has shown that he can solve tough situations, and I know he has the desire to play, GM Jere Lehtinen says in a statement.
At the same time, the team’s final selection decision meant bad news for Sami Päivärinta, who will be left out of the World Championship team and will return to Finland.
