Leijonat: These players were dropped from the World Championship team!
The Finnish men’s ice hockey national team has finalized its roster for the World Championships starting next week in Switzerland. The team was announced on Sunday after the Euro Hockey Tour final match played in Sweden.
Excluded from the final World Championship team were goalkeeper Waltteri Ignatjew, defenders Miska Kukkonen, Juuso Riikola, and Topias Vilén, as well as forwards Petteri Puhakka, Eetu Päkkilä, and Aku Räty.
Räty played in the Sweden match on Finland’s top line alongside Aleksander Barkov, but his game ended unfortunately in the first period in Ängelholm. The injured forward limped to the bench and was unable to return to the ice.
The 24-year-old Vilén, representing the New Jersey Devils, has appeared in two NHL games this season.
The Finnish ice hockey team will travel to the World Championship tournament on Tuesday. The tournament will kick off for the Lions on Friday with a match against Germany.
