Last-minute solution – The million-dollar struggle of the NHL goalie crushed by the Lions has ended
The Columbus Blue Jackets and goaltender Jet Greaves have reached an agreement on a new contract extension. The team announced on Thursday that the parties made a three-year deal worth a total of 15 million dollars.
Contract negotiations progressed slowly and with difficulty. Greaves had already taken his contract matters to arbitration, where the perspectives of the restricted free agent and the team regarding the player’s salary are addressed before an external resolution is made.
If the team does not accept the arbitrator’s decision, the player becomes a free agent and can move to another NHL team.
According to Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman, the parties’ views were far apart. Greaves was seeking a contract worth 7.5 million dollars, while Columbus deemed a total compensation of 2.8 million dollars appropriate.
Ultimately, an agreement was reached just before the arbitrator’s decision, and Greaves will continue in Columbus with a three-year contract.
The 25-year-old goaltender played 55 games for Columbus last season. His save percentage was 90.73.
Greaves became familiar to Finns during the spring World Championships, where he served as Canada’s number one goaltender. He also played in the semifinal match between Finland and Canada, which the Lions won 4–2 to advance to the final.
