Kimmo Timonen recalls how he got Aleksandr Ovechkin boiling at the Olympics: “Didn’t like it!”
The Lions legend Kimmo Timonen had a great national team career and played in five Olympics. Before the Italy match on Friday, he reminisced about the Sochi Olympics in HBO’s hockey studio.
In the quarterfinal match, the Lions faced the host country Russia. The fierce team that entered the tournament was the favorite in front of their home crowd, but the Lions pulled off a huge upset, taking a 3-1 victory and knocking Russia out of the medal games.
At the end of the tournament, Timonen went to rub salt in the wounds of Russia’s superstar Aleksandr Ovechkin.
– We got the bronze medals around our necks, and we had the players’ association room where we could meet parents, wives, and girlfriends. Ovechkin was also there. I told him, buddy, do you want to see this bronze medal? He didn’t like it! He said, “f you,” Timonen laughed.
