Defending Finnish champion KalPa received unfortunate news right away in their playoff opener.

The team’s defender Hugo Gallet has been placed under a temporary suspension by the league’s disciplinary delegation.

The French defender tackled HIFK’s Daniel Mäkiaho in the head during Friday’s opening game. The situation immediately led to a 5+20 minute penalty and a game misconduct.

On Saturday morning, the league announced that Gallet has been placed under a temporary suspension pending a final disciplinary decision.

– The situation room has reviewed the incident, and the head video referee has deemed Gallet’s tackle as a head check that warrants disciplinary review. According to the head video referee, a suspension should be imposed for the act, as stated in the disciplinary announcement.

For KalPa, the situation is difficult as the playoff series continues immediately.

The situation of Mäkiaho, who was injured from Gallet’s tackle, raises concerns in the HIFK camp. The 24-year-old star forward did not return to the ice after the hit he took in the first period, and there is still uncertainty about his playing condition for Saturday’s game.

KalPa won the series opener clearly 4–1. Three wins are required for a place in the quarter-finals.
