Goalkeeper Niklas Rubin will continue with Oulun Kärpät next season after all. Kärpät announced on Thursday a one-year contract extension.

The 30-year-old Rubin arrived in Oulu for the 2025–26 season. He was named the best goalkeeper in the league after the 2024–25 season. Rubin, who hails from Kungsbacka, played in the SHL for four seasons before joining the league.

– This decision suits me and my family perfectly. It feels safe to continue in a familiar environment. I have had many discussions with sports director Kimmo Kapanen, and we see the future in the same way, Rubin says.

Sports director Kimmo Kapanen emphasizes the importance of the contract.

– We have had excellent discussions about the future with Niklas, and we are clearly on the same page. He is a top goalkeeper, and it is great that he wanted to continue here specifically, even though there was interest from other leagues. This contract brings support and security for the future and is a big piece of next season’s team!, Kapanen rejoices.

Rubin’s continuation with Kärpät was quite a surprise, as his name had been linked to the Czech top league.
